Designation

Appointment Objective

  • Dissemination of Korean culture through Korean language education targeted towards those who learn Korean as a foreign language
  • Expansion of cooperation among nations through exchange from the perspective of cultural reciprocity
  • Contribution to realizing cultural and language diversity through greater international exchange of languages and cultures

Direction in designation of new King Sejong Institute

  • Strategic designation considering the regional demand for Korean language/culture and the need for a balanced increase in the number of King Sejong Institutes
  • Designation with emphasis on countries where there is no King Sejong Institute currently designated
  • Strategic designation through cooperation between public institutions (2014 case: cooperation between Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) and the National Information Society Agency (NIA)

  • King Sejong Institute appointments are processed and determined by the following procedure.

Information about Request Announcement

  • Method of announcement: Post notice on the “King Sejong Institute Foundation Nuri-House Bulletin
  • Notification season and period: 6 months prior to the estimated begin date of the appointed King Sejong Institute/ no less than 10 days
  • Announcement content: Qualifications for King Sejong Institutes, application process details, etc.

Types of King Sejong Institutes based on operation

  • Independent-type
    King Sejong Institute operated by a local institution outside Korea
  • Connective-type
    King Sejong Institute jointly operated by a local institution outside Korea and a Korean institution (including a Korean embassy) through the signing of an agreement
  • Collaborative-type
    King Sejong Institute designated by the King Sejong Institute Foundation, for which support is provided through the signing of an agreement with a public institution in Korea

  • Mandatory requirements for prospective institute applicants
Founding entity

Local operating institution

  • An institution that is operating a Korean language teaching institution or has plans to do so at a local government institution or university/graduate school or an institution linked to a university
  • An institution that is operating a Korean language teaching institution or has plans to do so at a non-profit corporation registered with the local government or a private organization for the public good
    ※ Individual or privately-run teaching institutions excluded

A Korean operation agency

  • An institution that is operating a Korean language teaching institution overseas or has plans to do so directly or through consignment to a Korean government institution (including a Korean embassy) or a local government in Korea
  • A Korean university (graduate school), non-profit organization or a private organization that is operating a Korean language teaching institution overseas or has plans to do so in cooperation with overseas institutions for the public good
    ※ Private institutions established under the Act on the Establishment and Operation of Private Teaching Institutes and Extracurricular Lessons will be excluded.
Facility
  • (Lecture hall) Acquirement of two lecture halls with a room capacity that holds a minimum of 10 students
  • (Administrative office) Administrative space for King Sejong Institute’s operational and management tasks
  • (Reference library) Reference space to stock and view Korean language and culture resources (Administrative office and reference library content added)
Teacher

Korean teachers

  • All teachers need to meet one or more of the following conditions.
    1. A holder of a Korean-teaching certificate [issued under the Framework Act on Korean Language, Article 19; Enforcement Decree of the said Act, Articles 13 and 14; the Public Notice of the MCST (concerning the Korean Teacher Qualification Screening Committee and the regulations on application for qualification screening of Korean teachers and issuance of a certificate for them)]
      ※ Holders of secondary teaching certificate do not qualify.
    2. One who has completed a course for training a Korean teacher (under Table 1, Enforcement Decree of the Framework Act on Korean Language)
    3. One with at least one year's experience in Korean teaching with a bachelor's degree in language/literature or language education
      ※ Attachment of evidential documents concerning relevant qualifications is required.

Culture lecturer

  • Hiring a Korean culture lecturer is not mandatory, but when hiring such a person the following conditions must be met.
  • A holder of a bachelor's degree in a subject related to the lecture or one with at least two years' of teaching experience in the field
Curriculum
  • At minimum, establish two elementary or intermediate level curricula and operate 30+ weeksof class
  • One class per week must be +120 minutes (including break) of Korean language studies
  • Operation of at least one culture lecture is recommended.
Operation
  • Selection of 'the director of King Sejong Institute' responsible for the general operation of the King Sejong Institute
    ※ The director of King Sejong Institute shall be in a position to represent the institution and capable of operating the overall establishment on-site.
  • Secure at least one operating staff who is Korean or proficient in Korean
    ※ In the case of a type linked with a Korean embassy, it needs to secure operating staff in addition to the administrative staff hired by the Korean embassy.
  • It is necessary to hire staff such as a teacher or operating staff who have appropriate visas to work for King Sejong Institute.
  • Opening, management, and execution of an account (an account in the name of the operating institution) dedicated to support funding for King Sejong Institute's operation

    Appointingscreening committee will becomposed to conduct (1st) document screening (local site inquiry) > (2nd) on-site inspection > (3rd) final evaluation.
    ※ King Sejong Institute Designation Screening Committee: Composed of experts and scholars specializing in Korean education/culture, officials of institutions executing or studying government-supported overseas projects, and experts of the global community or region

How to submit applications

  • Applying institutions shall submit their applications through the online system for King Sejong Institute designation screening (http://new.ksif.or.kr).
  • Required documents (to be attached to the file provided by the online application system)
    • A. (For all) business (or institution) registration certificate (that can prove qualification for application)
      - As for an institution outside Korea, their certificates shall be submitted after notarization along with their Korean translation. With regard to connective types, both institutions shall submit their certificates.
    • B. (Document to be submitted by connective type) An agreement signed by the two institutions for King Sejong Institute-related application and operation

    • C. (Document to be submitted by a local operating institution, which is a university) A letter of recommendation drawn up by the President of the local operating university
      - Please include a statement concerning how to provide support for King Sejong Institute (e.g. provision of support for relevant facilities, independent management of support funding provided by the Foundation, and securing teachers).
    • D. (Document to be submitted by a non-profit corporation or organization) Its articles of incorporation
      - Submittal of material such as articles of incorporation including the year and purpose of establishment
    • E. (Common to all teachers) Korean language teacher qualification certificate, a certificate of completion of the Korean language teacher training course, career certificate, and academic certificate
      - Teachers submitting a resume need to submit evidential documents concerning qualifications stated in the resume, along with their Korean translation where necessary.

Support provided by the Foundation for those designated as a King Sejong Institute

  • Support funding for operation of King Sejong Institute
  • Facility-related support for improvement of education at King Sejong Institute
  • Provision of standard educational courses for King Sejong Institute, textbooks, guidelines, and questionnaires for evaluation of achievement at each stage ※ Textbooks for students to be purchased individually
  • Provision of support for establishment of an international network for cooperation through the Korean Educators Conference
  • Dispatch of teachers specializing in the Korean language  ※ Selection of institutions for dispatch of such personnel according to demand
  • Provision of a teacher training course designed to re-educate teachers specializing in the Korean language and upgrade their qualifications
  • Provision of Korean culture-related programs and dispatch of culture experts (interns, etc.)
  • Invitation of exemplary students to Korea for participation in Korean culture programs
  • Provision of a business management system for better administrative operation/management at King Sejong Institute
  • Provision of educational materials concerning online lectures carried out at Nuri-Sejong Hakdang
