Appointing Process

  • King Sejong Institute appointments are processed and determined by the following procedure.
  1. Announcement of application receiving period
  2. local site inquiry of applicants
  3. document evaluation and 1st round finalists
  4. on-site inspection
  5. final evaluation and announcement of finalists
  6. new operations personnel training
  7. consignment contractsigning and test operations (6 months)

Information on Application Receiving Period

  • Method of announcement: Post notice on the “King Sejong Institute Foundation Nuri-House Bulletin
  • Notification season and period: 6 months prior to the estimated begin date of the appointed King Sejong Institute/ no less than 10 days
  • Announcement content: Qualifications for King Sejong Institutes, application process details, etc.

Information about Request Announcement

  • Method of Announcement : Posting the request announcement on notices at the King Sejong Institute Foundation Homepage
  • Announcement Period :More than 10 days at least
  • Announcement Contents: Type of Designation, Designation Procedure, Method of Request, Method of Examination & Screening Criteria, etc

Types of King Sejong Institutes based on operation

  • Independent type: A prospective local/overseas institute can directly apply to the King SejongInstituteFoundation, receive support funds in the form of a grant, and directly manage the school.
  • Partner type :
    • A prospective local/overseas institutecan apply to the King Sejong Institute Foundation after it enters into an agreement with a domestic institution/Korean diplomatic office (e.g. embassy, cultural center, etc.) regarding operations and duties.
    • A domestic agency or diplomatic office will receive the grant funds from the King SejongInstitute Foundation for directly managing operations.

The King Sejong Institute Designation Requirements

  • Mandatory requirements for prospective institute applicants
Founding Institute Local (overseas) operating institute
  • Government agencies on-siteor university-affiliated agencies on-site that (will) operatea Korean institute
  • Non-profit corporations or private organizations registered on-site that (will) operate a Korean institute for public interest
  • ※excludes private academies
Partner operating institute (domestic institutions/diplomatic offices)
  • Overseas agencies that (will) operate a Korean institute commissioned by domestic government agencies (diplomatic offices, etc.) and local/provincial government agencies
  • Domestic universities and non-profit/private corporations that cooperate with overseas institutions and (will) operate a Korean institute for public interest
Facility
  • (Lecture hall) Acquirement of two lecture halls with a room capacity that holds a minimum of 10 students
  • (Administrative office) Administrative space for King Sejong Institute’s operational and management tasks
  • (Reference library) Reference space to stock and view Korean language and culture resources (Administrative office and reference library content added)
Teacher

Curriculum
  • At minimum, establish two elementary or intermediate level curricula and operate 30+ weeksof class
  • One class per week must be +120 minutes (including break) of Korean language studies
Operation
  • A King SejongInstitute director responsible for overall management and operations
  • ※ King SejongInstitute director: In a position of authority to represent the prospectiveinstitute applicantand able to actually oversee and manage on-site
  • Securing at least one proficient Korean-speaking operations personnel
  • Teaching and operations personnelare required to go through an identification process in order to be employed
  • Open, manage, and operate an independent King SejongInstitute bank account for operational support funds (Open and manage a separate bank account under name of operating institution)

  • Method of Evaluation
  • Appointingscreening committee will becomposed to conduct (1st) document screening (local site inquiry) > (2nd) on-site inspection > (3rd) final evaluation.

Required application documents

  • Prospective institute candidates will submit the “New King Sejong Institute OperationsRequest Application” (attached in notification bulletin) to the King SejongInstitute Foundation with the below material attached
  • Business license (i.e. corporate license or any other documents that serve as proof for application requirements)
  • - For overseas institutes, please submit Korean version with notarization. For partner institutes, both institutes must submit.

    - For non-profit corporations or organizations, please submit documents, such as an articles of association, that show the agency’s founding year and purpose.

  • A copy of your Korean teaching credential, a copy of Korean teacher training program qualifications, an original copy of Korean education certificate of career
  • - Submit any relevant documents for teachers who submit a resume. For foreigners, please submit a Korean version

  • A recommendation letter from the local on-site university president (only if the local institute is a university)
  • - King Sejong Institute facility support, independent management of support funds, teacher retention support, etc. King Sejong Institute application details must be clearly indicated

  • One copy of a written agreement (MOU) for duties managed by each partner institute
